Ever since the invention of the Internet, advertising on the World Wide Web has been very popular. Corporations and businesses of all sizes, use the internet to advertise on and nearly any webpage you go to will have some type of ad on it. Consumers can go to any search engine and type the keyword relating to what they are looking for and they will be provided with a huge list from which they can select. This form of advertising has the great advantage of saving both time and money.
It has become really easy for any business to have a personalized website by which they can advertise, to directly interact with the customer; provide details about their product and services. Regular newsletters, offers, discounts can be posted to increase the interest of the website visitors.
However because it is so vast, there are some that abuse the system and misuse this type of marketing avenue. Internet advertising is classified into two kinds of advertisement, legal and illegal online advertising. Advertising legally will have sites that use directories, desktop advertising, email advertising or online search engine advertising. However, the illegal form of advertising is often referred to as ’spamming’. This is usually done by altering some system settings with the help of external applications, after which pop-ups are sent to a particular network or computer. These are known as adware and spyware software programs. Some of these are really harmful, the most famous being Trojans, which are very hard to uninstall and remove from the system.
Advertising on the internet is a lucrative business, as technology grows at a rapid pace and online advertisements are becoming very eye catching. Vivid colors, good page layout and a lot of imagination are all involved. The most popular tool for designing advertisements is Adobe Flash. Depending on the technology being used, the designed advertisements can be classified into various categories.
Banner ads are animations displayed on the website usually created in HTML or Eudora. You will be able to select the ad category and size. Trick banner ads are banner ads that have an extra functionality of dialog boxes and buttons that are displayed as an alert or error message.
Pop-up advertisements usually come up and take up a certain amount of the screens web page. Ads that open beneath the active web page are called ’pop-under advertisements’ and these will typically come up as soon as the present window is minimized or closed.
Interstitial ads are those that are displayed before directing over to the desired page.
Background or Wallpaper ads can cover the entire background of the website page.
Floating ads are rightly named, because they float across the screen.
Advertisements which are displayed in a video form on a website are known as a video ad.
Webmasters can use various ways to begin advertising on the internet, such as: CPM, CPV, CPC, CPA, CPL and CPO. First is CPM; which stands for ’cost per mil’ and this is when the advertiser pays for the amount of people the advertisement is to go out too. CPV or cost per visitor means that the advertiser is meant to pay for the people to whom the advertisement was delivered. CPC or cost per click means paying for the number of clicks made on the advertisement by the visitors. Although the advertisement is put up on the website, the amount is paid only after the visitor clicks on the URL of the advertisement. Next is CPA; ’cost per action’ and this is when the ad publisher covers all charges of the advertisement, but you only get paid each time a visitor click on the ad and then purchases something or joins a membership. CPL or cost per lead is similar to CPA, only that the visitor doesn’t have to necessarily buy anything; he or she can simply apply to get regular newsletters and special offers. Lastly is CPO or cost per order, this is where the advertiser pays each time an order is placed.
Online advertising cannot only be used to promote a product or service but in fact they can be used for purposes like promoting charity and spreading education.
